Tom Chilton, ex-senior designer and game director on World of Warcraft since 2004, has stepped down from his role and moved onto slightly mysterious Blizzard project.
Announced in a blog post, Chilton revealed that his last work on the game has been the first content update for the well-received new expansion, Legion and the content plan for further updates.
World of Warcraft: Legion Review
"My personal journey working on WoW as Game Director is at an end," he explains, "but my journey with Blizzard isn’t. I’ll still be here, but will be focusing on another project within the company."
Blizzard and Chilton will not comment further on whether Chilton will be joining another of Blizzard's existing games, or if he'll be beginning work on something entirely new.
Blizzard was only recently hiring for a game director to "lead the Diablo series into the future", which has led to renewed online speculation that the company will announce a new entry in the dungeon crawling series at Blizzcon next month.
There are a wealth of new Blizzard projects that could conceivably be in the offing - with StarCraft 2's final campaign released, some expect a third game, Warcraft 4 has been hovering in the public consciousness for years now, and some even expect to see a new attempt to tackle the MMO genre after Blizzard's cancelled Titan project.
Chilton has been replaced on World of Warcraft by assistant game director Ion Hazzikostas. "I can assure you that the future for World of Warcraft continues to be bright," says Chilton, "and as a player, I’m excited to discover what’s in store next alongside all of you."
