Smilegate Opens European Office To Boost Crossfire’s E-sports Presence

2/17/17
Smilegate, the developer of free-to-play tactical shooter Crossfire, has opened an office in Berlin. According to GamesIndustry, Smilegate Europe will take over the operations of the game in that region. The office is led by a former CTO of Aeria Games, with a former Gameforge product marketing director as its head of marketing.

In case you weren’t aware, crossfire is huge in China and Korea. Smilegate claims to have eight million active users and 650 million registered users. Yes, over half a billion players have tried the game out. That’s more than the number of people who have played World of Warcraft, RuneScape, League of Legends, and World of Tanks — combined.

If you follow SuperData’s reports, you’ll also know that Crossfire always ranks very highly in its lists of top-grossing games, currently #2 among PC games in December 2016, behind just League of Legends. The focus for Smilegate Europe is apparently on increasing Crossfire’s e-sports lackluster e-sports presence in the West. If they can boost it to anything even remotely approximating Crossfire’s presence in Asia, it would be a big deal.
